Hair Transplant Side Effects

When you are thinking about getting a hair transplant, I highly recommend that you not only focus on the end result. The consultant you spoke with has no doubt shown you pictures of the work that his clinic has delivered. But the fact that other people have had great successes, doesn’t guarantee that you will too. As a matter of fact, a hair transplant is a very invasive surgery where things can go horribly wrong.

Because of improved technology and increased experience, things go wrong less frequently than they used to. Most hair transplant clinics will be able to give you very pleasing results without too many unwanted side effects post treatment. But there is a small number of side effects you might very well develop after having had your surgery.

Hair Transplant Side Effects

The most annoying side effect to a hair transplant, is losing your hairs due to something called ‘shock loss’ after you had your treatment. When your donor hair is implanted back into the recipient wounds on top of your scalp, this is actually quite a shock to them. The shock is so big, that your new hairs will fall out 2 weeks after having had the surgery.

But not only does your transplanted hair fall out. It’s also possible that the surrounding, non transplanted hairs will fall out. This is not a pleasant sight, but unfortunately it can and does happen. Luckily, this is only temporary.

Post surgery, your scalp, eyes and forehead may swell up a little. This is also a temporary condition and it will last no longer than a week. There are prescription medications available to help you deal with the uncomfortable feeling of having a swollen head.

The healing recipient wounds on top of your head may start itching. This is normal, because when they heal up they start forming scabs. It’s important not too touch these, as you might damage your new hairs this way.
